The Story Behind This Rug
The Shah Abbas design takes its name from Safavid ruler Abbas I. It is a classic composition combining large palmettes, rosettes, and arabesque vines, developed in the Isfahan court workshops. In the 19th century, Ziegler & Co. adapted this design in Sultanabad to suit the dimensions and color palettes of Western living rooms. Today, Afghan artisans weave in the same spirit using their own Ghazni wool and knowledge of natural dyes; the natural washing process gives the composition its soft, patinated look.
Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Uniqueness: There is only one of this rug; its knotting rhythm and dye batch can never be replicated.
- Plant-dye longevity: Unlike synthetic aniline dyes, natural root dyes do not fade; they simply soften over time.
- Ghazni wool: Long-fiber, lanolin-rich wool from high-altitude sheep provides natural stain resistance and a silky sheen.
- Asymmetrical Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges than the Turkish (Gördes) knot.
- Investment value: Genuine plant-dyed Afghan rugs gain value over generations of use.
Color and Design
Shah Abbas palmettes in terracotta, mustard, ivory, and burgundy tones sit on a faded apple-green field; large lotus rosettes are arranged symmetrically along the vertical axis, connected by curling leaves and vines. The border features a narrow row of palmettes and leaves with delicate floral spacing; a small rosette band runs along the inner guard.
Care Recommendations
- Vacuum on a low setting using a brushless attachment.
- Blot spills immediately with a white cotton cloth; do not rub.
- Rotate 180° every six months to distribute sunlight and foot traffic evenly.
- Leave wet cleaning to a rug cleaner who specializes in plant dyes.
This rug is a quiet reweaving of a Safavid garden; its apple-green field is its gentle light.

Protect Its Elegance
To preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia’s handwoven creations made with natural fibers—which add value to your living space—for generations, a careful care routine is essential.
Immediate Action and Liquid Spills
When a liquid spills, timing is critical. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth, blot the liquid gently from the surface without rubbing. Always work in the direction of the rug’s pile (the natural direction in which the fibers lie). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If in doubt, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use a vacuum cleaner with low suction. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance how natural yarns react to light and prevent uneven changes in color (fading), we recommend rotating your rug every 2 to 6 months.
Expert Care (Professional Cleaning)
Fine textures such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the rug’s silky sheen and structural integrity. For a thorough clean, seek help only from professional rug care centers specializing in natural fibers.
