The Story of This Rug
The Shah Abbas design takes its name from the Safavid ruler Abbas I; it is a classic composition combining large palmettes, rosettes, and arabesque vines developed in the royal workshops of Isfahan. In the 19th century, Ziegler & Co. adapted this design in Sultanabad to suit the dimensions and color palettes of Western interiors. Afghan artisans today weave the same spirit anew using their own Ghazni wool and knowledge of botanical dyes; the natural washing process gives the composition its soft, patinated character.
Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Uniqueness: Only one exists; the same knot rhythm and dye batch can never be repeated.
- Durability of botanical dyes: Unlike synthetic aniline dyes, root dyes do not fade; they simply soften over time.
- Ghazni wool: Long-fiber wool with a high lanolin content, sourced from high-altitude sheep, provides natural stain resistance and a silky sheen.
- Asymmetrical Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges than the Turkish (Gördes) knot.
- Investment value: Genuine Afghan rugs made with botanical dyes gain value through generations of use.
Color and Pattern
Shah Abbas palmettes in terracotta, mustard, ivory, and burgundy tones appear on a faded almond green ground; large lotus rosettes stand symmetrically along the vertical axis, connected by curling leaves and vines. The border features a narrow row of palmettes and leaves with fine floral intervals; the inner guard border contains a small rosette band.
Care Recommendations
- Clean using a low-speed vacuum with a brushless attachment.
- Blot spills immediately with a white cotton cloth; do not rub.
- Rotate 180° every 6 months so sunlight and foot traffic are distributed evenly.
- Leave wet cleaning to a rug specialist experienced with botanical dyes.
This rug is a quiet reweaving of a Safavid garden; the almond green ground is its tranquil light.

Protect Elegance
A delicate care routine should be adopted to preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia's handwoven and natural-fiber pieces, which add value to your living space, for generations to come.
Immediate Action and Contact with Liquids
When liquid is spilled, timing is the most critical factor. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth, remove the liquid from the surface by gently blotting only, never rubbing. Always work in the direction of the rug's pile (the natural direction in which the fibers lie). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If you are unsure, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use vacuum cleaners with low suction power. High-powered upright vacuum cleaners and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance the reaction of natural yarns to light and prevent localized tonal differences (fading), we recommend changing the direction of your rug every 2 to 6 months.
The Expert Touch (Professional Cleaning)
Noble textures such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. Such products can irreversibly damage the rug's silky sheen and structural integrity. For deep cleaning, seek assistance only from professional rug care centers specializing in natural fibers.
