Afghan Shawl Carpet · Review of a Carpet Woven with the Vertical Panel of a Kashmir Shawl

A single-piece Shawl carpet woven with asymmetric Persian knots in workshops of northern Afghanistan, carrying the vertical striped quilt pattern of Kashmir and Kirman shawls onto the carpet. Narrow vertical panels each bear a different color and motif load: some feature boteh (buta) chains, others stylized rows of flowers, and some carry Herati-like rosettes. A deep red border frames the entire composition.

The Story of This Carpet

Shal carpets are a form adapted from the weaving looms of 18th-19th century Kashmir and Kirman shawl fabrics. The characteristic feature of shawl fabric is that each of the adjacent narrow vertical panels carries a different pattern; thus, each piece becomes a multi-pattern collage. Afghan artisans reinterpret this tradition with the robustness of Ghazni wool and the warm patina of plant dyes; each stripe becomes a separate batch, a separate rhythm.

Why a Single-Piece Handwoven Afghan Carpet

  1. Uniqueness: There is only one of this carpet; the same knot rhythm and dye batch cannot be repeated.
  2. Durability of plant dyes: Unlike synthetic aniline, root dyes do not fade; they only soften over time.
  3. Ghazni wool: Long-fiber wool from high-altitude sheep with a high lanolin content; provides natural stain resistance and silky shine.
  4. Asymmetric Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges compared to the Turkish (Gordes) knot.
  5. Investment value: Genuine plant-dyed Afghan carpets gain value through use across generations.

Color and Pattern

Within a wide red outer border, dozens of narrow vertical panels are lined up side by side: mustard yellow background boteh stripes, navy blue background flower bouquets, cream background Herati rosette rows, and brick background leaf garlands. Madder root, walnut shell, indigo, and mold green tones; the vertical rhythm ripples like the texture of a shawl fabric when light falls on it.

Care Recommendations

  • Clean with a brushless vacuum head at low speed.
  • Immediately blot stains with a white cotton cloth; do not rub.
  • Rotate 180° every 6 months; ensure even exposure to sun and traffic.
  • Leave wet cleaning to a carpet specialist experienced with plant dyes.

The Shawl carpet is not a single motif but a multi-pattern collage; this piece carries dozens of small stories simultaneously in the embrace of red.

Protect Elegance
A delicate care routine should be adopted to preserve the original splendor and silky texture of handwoven and natural fiber Carpetdocia pieces that add value to your living space for generations.

Immediate Action and Liquid Contact
Timing is the most critical factor in case of possible liquid spills. Use a clean, slightly damp cloth to gently blot the liquid from the surface without rubbing. Always perform this action in the direction of the carpet’s nap (the natural direction of the fibers). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers like TENCEL™ and viscose. Stop the intervention immediately if you have any doubts.

Routine Care and Light Balance
Always prefer vacuum cleaners with low suction power in your weekly cleaning routine. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance the reaction of natural fibers to light and prevent regional tone differences (fading), we recommend changing the orientation of your carpet every 2 to 6 months.

Expert Touch (Professional Cleaning)
Noble textures such as handwoven, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the silky shine and structural integrity of the carpet. For deep cleansing, support should be sought only from professional carpet care centers specialized in natural fibers.

Washing Instructions
Delicate pieces in the Carpetdocia collections are not suitable for machine washing due to their structure. (Only specific models clearly labeled "Washable" in their name can be washed in household machines on a low heat and delicate cycle.)
